Local Area Info

Maidstone is Kent’s economic centre. The borough’s administrative centre, also named Maidstone, sits on the banks of the River Medway. Traditionally, the area has been active in paper and newsprint manufacturing, and is now a lively commuter town for London.

Traditionally an agriculture centre, Maidstone’s economy has been moving away from heavy industry and towards a greater focus on service and light industry sectors. The town is home to the largest office centre in Kent, serving as the home for businesses in paper and packaging industry. Business parks throughout Maidstone have also been fostering the growth of high-technology businesses. Major employers in Maidstone include loudspeaker manufacturer KEF and Aylesford Newsprint, the largest paper recycling centre in Europe.

Trade routes to and from Maidstone were traditionally on the waters of the River Medway until the rise of railways in the 19th century. The M2 and the M20 motorways run along the north of the borough and the Maidstone town centre. Weekly commuter coaches connect the community with London, and regular railway services operate to London and Ashford International, offering connections to Europe via the Eurostar.
