Local Area Info


North of the West Pennine Moors is Blackburn, the largest town in Lancashire. The town sits just 13 miles from the edge of Greater Manchester. Since the 1950s, Blackburn has emerged as a multi-cultural community, particularly with significant immigration from India and Pakistan.

Blackburn has been a textile centre since the mid-13th century. With industrialisation, an explosion of textile manufacturing contributed to Blackburn emerging as one of the world’s first industrialised towns. By the mid-20th century, the area’s textile sector began to decline. In recent years, retail has grown with the development of The Mall Blackburn and the new Blackburn Market, as well as the Grimshaw Park, Townsmoor Retail Park and the Peel leisure and Retail Park developments.
