Local Area Info

Home to the imposing York Minster and a rich history dating back to the Roman period, York is a major tourist destination in the North of England. The walled city is located in North Yorkshire on the River Ouse.

Medieval York was a major wool trading centre. By the 19th century, it emerged as a railway and confectionery manufacturing centre. The service sector is now York’s largest employer, with major employers including the City of York Council, Aviva, Selby and York Primary Care Trust, Shepherd Building Group, British Telecom, CPP Group, Nestle and NFU Mutual. The city is also home to the University of York, one of the leading universities in the United Kingdom.

York is served by several long distance trunk roads, including the A64 which links York with the A1(M) and M1 motorways. Regular rail services to towns throughout the United Kingdom are available from York railway station, which sits on the East Coast Main Line.
