Local Area Info

South East London is one of the London Plan's designated sub-regions. This area is home to more than 1.3 million people and is comprised of the boroughs of Bromley, Bexley, Southwark, Greenwich, and Lewisham. Parts of Croydon and Lambeth are often considered as belonging to South East London. This sub-region is well connected to central London, and in particular to the financial districts in Canary Wharf and the City of London via underground, Overground, DLR, and railway services. The UK's busiest train station (London Waterloo station) is located in Lambeth. In addition, South East London is located within easy reach of the main access roads into London, including the A2, the A20, and the M25. Due to this, South East London is considered a gateway to the capital and to the South East of England.

Retail, real estate, distribution, and professional and business services are some of the most important contributors to the South East London economy. With the arrival of Crossrail services by 2019, this sub-region is set to increase its potential and desirability in the eyes of investors. In Bexley and Bromley, manufacturing, warehousing and distribution companies also have a strong presence, possibly due to their proximity to the M20 and M25 roads. Most boroughs of South East London have high levels of outward commuting, mainly towards central London. This sub-region has experienced a steady rise in the number of entrepreneurial activity, as an increasing number of start-ups have chosen South East London as their business base. Many of these newly created companies are part of the knowledge economy, and in particular Southwark has seen growing interest from businesses in the media, digital, and creative industries. Southwark is also becoming a popular alternative for companies looking for affordable office space within easy reach of central London. A similar trend has been observed in Greenwich, where an important number of IT, communications, and creative industries have been clustering around the Digital Peninsula. Tourism and education are other important industry sectors in Greenwich. The following sectors have been identified as having potential for strategic growth across South East London: advanced manufacturing, construction, low carbon goods, renewable energies, and the knowledge economy.
