Steeped in history and surrounded by ancient city walls, Bath is home to many cultural events, such as literary and live music festivals as well as bustling shopping streets and beautiful countryside. The centre sits in the original Stothert & Pitt Ltd buildings constructed for the internationally renowned engineering firm that was founded in Bath in 1785, the earliest part of this building dates from 1857 and is Grade II listed. Stothert & Pitt specialised in crane design, including the design and production of dockside and offshore cranes. The company developed the first steam crane in 1851, before the first electric crane in 1892-3. A few cranes produced by the company survive around the world, several of which are listed.
