With a population of nearly 900,000 people and over 42,000 VAT-registered companies, Berkshire has one of the UK's highest business density rates. Berkshire's economic importance is reflected in its GVA output, which at £30 billion represents 15 per cent of the total GVA in the South East of England. Other key figures that are proof of the encouraging business climate in Berkshire include:

  • The UK's second highest business birth rate, currently averaging 12.4 per cent and only surpassed by London
  • A large percentage (42.3 per cent) of jobs created in high-growth sectors, with nearly 30 per cent of those belonging to the knowledge economy
  • The UK's second highest levels of economic output per head, currently estimated at £32,800
  • In 2014, Berkshire ranked first in terms of economic competitiveness at national level
  • A five-year business survival rate of 48 per cent - higher than the national average

The local business climate favours the set up and development of both small and large companies. According to Thames Valley Berkshire, there are more than 30,000 SMEs in the county and their focus of activity is highly diverse. However, tech-based activities have been responsible for the success of many Berkshire companies, as the region has been listed by KPGM has having one of the country's top 15 'tech location quotients'. Business growth in this sector is supported by the presence of prestigious R&D institutions, such as the University of Reading, which offers local businesses first-class facilities and access to innovative programmes at the Reading Enterprise Centre.

At the other end of the scale we find the vast number of multinational corporations that have chosen Berkshire as their UK business base. It is estimated that the county is home to the headquarters of more than 200 international firms involved in media, IT, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energies. Dedicated sites like the Thames Valley Park, the Slough Trading Estate, the Winnersh Triangle, or Green Park are highly sought-after business locations within Berkshire. Excellent connectivity links are another reason why an increasing number of businesses are being set up or relocating to Berkshire. The county is within easy reach of one of the world's largest transportation hubs (Heathrow airport), and the M4 links many Berkshire communities with London, Bristol, and other large UK cities.

Recently, local and national authorities embarked on a large-scale investment programme that aims to capitalise on Berkshire's skills pool and economic potential. Nearly £100 million will be invested in infrastructure investments in Slough and Maidenhead, which will make these areas much more accessible from central London and Heathrow airport. The investment deal will also fund the creation of approximately 20,000 new jobs by 2021. According to the Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership, this programme will be of paramount importance for the region's businesses, as it is expected to boost Berkshire's GVA by £700 million to make the region a long-term hotspot for investment. Future development in Berkshire will focus on securing jobs growth in high-value sectors and on establishing firm connections between R&D institutions and the local business base. Immediate priorities include improving public transport and road access in and between the major business hubs in Berkshire (Bracknell, Reading, Maidenhead, Wokingham, and Newbury) and facilitating access to digital technologies, including 5G and high-capacity broadband.
