Blackfriars is situated within the City of London. First used in 1317, the name Blackfriars derives from the clothes worn by Dominican Friars based in a local priory. The priory served as the location for meetings of Parliament and the Privy Council until it was closed in 1538 by Henry VIII.

Blackfriars is now home to several firms active in the finance sector, including investment banks and financial services companies. The area is also the site of Blackfriars station, which is served by Thameslink and First Capital Connect, and Southeastern Trains.
