With more than 12,000 people working in this sector, Cambridgeshire is among the UK's top three largest creative hubs.

The local business scene in Cambridgeshire has greatly benefited from the increasingly close collaboration between its prestigious academic institutions and the local business and industry base. Recent research has shown that during the past decade alone, Cambridge University has been directly or indirectly involved in the creation of 1,500 new tech-related businesses, many of which have extraordinary survival rates of 80 per cent and above. The information and communication technology sector has also benefited from this partnership, and nowadays Cambridgeshire-based ICT firms enjoy all the advantages of being in one of the most advanced and successful business environments at regional and national level.

In addition, extensive research facilities are being developed throughout Cambridgeshire in order to accommodate the needs of companies engaged in medical research, bioscience, and pharmaceuticals. The Cambridge Biomedical Campus is often cited as a great example of the forward-looking business scene in the county. This facility is the largest of its kind in Europe and is home to leading profit and not-for-profit organisations, including AstraZeneca, Cancer Research UK, the Brain Repair Centre, and the Institute for Public Health.

Like other regional economies that have demonstrated their potential for unmatched development, Cambridgeshire has recently attracted nearly £120 million in public funding, which will be put to use to the benefit of local residents and businesses thanks to the Growth Deal. As part of this deal, the Local Enterprise Partnership has agreed to create more than 15,500 new jobs in the county by 2021, and has pledged to make substantial infrastructure improvements such as a new bypass south of Ely and the upgrade of the transport network along the M11. In addition, extensive areas will be redeveloped for commercial and industrial purposes, mostly around Greater Cambridge and Peterborough.
