Thanks to its strategic location between Greater Manchester, Wales, and the Manchester Ship Canal, Cheshire has always offered a vast deal of business and trade opportunities in a variety of industry sectors. Business tourism is a burgeoning sector in Cheshire, most notably in the eastern communities where first-class meeting and conferencing facilities are available.

Despite its predominantly rural character, Cheshire's towns provide a suitable base for the development of other types of business activities. In fact, the county has one of England's highest ratios of companies involved in the knowledge economy and in high-tech activities. Banking and finance are particularly important in and around Macclesfield, which is also a good location for businesses involved in education and health care. Business owners also benefit from the relative ease with which is possible to reach a large and mostly affluent customer base, as Cheshire-based businesses are within easy reach of large cities like Manchester and Liverpool.

In addition, Cheshire is part of the Atlantic Gateway, one of the UK's largest engines of growth and development and a major hub for logistics, transportation, and trade. This area has been designated as a special corridor due to its great potential to attract billions in inward investment, mainly in areas like digital and creative, life sciences, logistics and freight, and transportation. Several development programmes have been approved as part of the expansion of this corridor and with the objective of making Cheshire even more appealing to entrepreneurs. Among those programmes we can highlight the creation of large mixed-use developments in Warrington, the creation of an engineering incubator, the improvement of key infrastructure in Chester town centre, and the strategic regeneration plan affecting Ellesmere Port and the surrounding areas.
