Thanks to its proximity to London and its excellent transportation links, Essex has become the business location of choice of many entrepreneurs and business owners. The county's economic output is estimated to be at £5.8 billion a year, with productivity figures being in line with the national average. The most recent data sets confirm that there are more than 21,000 VAT-registered businesses in Essex, and that the high tech sector is particularly well represented in the area. The local business structure is predominantly comprised of small businesses that have between 0 and 4 employees, many of which are home-based businesses. The number of home-based businesses is expected to grow by a further 3,000 by 2020.

The most notable business centres in Essex are Chelmsford (Essex's county town and a large urban centre within the London commuter belt), Harlow, Colchester, and Basildon. According to a financial report, the top 100 most successful firms in Essex produce a combined annual turnover of more than £313 million. A large percentage of these Essex-based companies are involved in real estate and construction activities, while other sectors worth mentioning due to their potential for growth include banking and finance, logistics, and hospitality. In the coastal areas, tourism and leisure provide interesting business opportunities given the large number of visitors drawn by towns like Southend-on-Sea, Clacton-on-Sea, Walton, and Thurrock. Retail is another important source of business opportunities in Essex, as approximately 11 per cent of all jobs in the county are generated by this sector.

Crucial to Essex's importance as a business hub is the presence of London Stansted airport, an international transportation hub that serves more than 150 destinations worldwide. The airport itself has attracted a substantial amount of investment and is estimated to contribute with over £400 million to the county's economy. Essex's location within easy reach of the M25 and the M11 is also an important factor when it comes to the county's position as one of the largest business hubs in the south of England. In fact, the western areas of Essex are known as the M11 corridor, which is home to the headquarters of many international firms.

The availability and quality of commercial real estate is overall good in Essex, with nearly 2 million square feet being currently occupied for office, retail, or warehousing purposes. Factory space is especially in high demand in Maldon, whereas Chelmsford is considered a prime regional location for office space.

The Heart of Essex's Economic Futures final report has pointed out that further potential for growth exists throughout the county, but particularly in urban centres like Chelmsford, Brentwood, and Maldon. By 2031, the key drivers of economic growth in Brentwood will include professional and business services, transportation, education, and administrative and support services. In Chelmsford, most future business opportunities will come from the service sector and from advanced manufacturing activities, whereas in Maldon key strategic sectors include food production, petrochemicals, manufacturing, and renewable energies.
