For centuries, the county of Kent has benefited from its strategic location within easy reach of London and on the shores of the English Channel. Trade, logistics, and transportation have been closely linked to the economic history of the area, and to this day these sectors still play an important role in Kent's thriving industry base. The logistics and distribution sector is one of the main contributors to the local business scene, mainly thanks to the presence of the Port of Dover, which functions as a gateway to both the UK and continental Europe. The area is particularly well equipped to suit the needs of firms in search of industrial space, as Kent is home to top-class warehousing and cold storage facilities, as well as having several large distribution centres that still have plenty of potential for future development.

In addition to logistics and distribution, the real estate and retail industries offer substantial opportunities for entrepreneurs and jobs seekers alike. These sectors are behind the county's above-average growth figures, which have reached 3.3 per cent. The visitor economy is also keeping the local economy alive and helping entrepreneurs find new opportunities in eco-tourism, leisure, cultural experiences, and entertainment. A recent report published by Visit Kent revealed that tourism and other related activities are worth nearly £3.5 billion, and that further growth is expected in the short and medium term with the recent development of tourist attractions like Dreamland and Turner Contemporary.

Other key economic indicators that confirm Kent's leading position as a top business destination include the following:

  • An important percentage of employees (15.1 per cent) with skills in professions related to the knowledge economy
  • Average three-year business survival rates of nearly 60 per cent
  • One-year business survival rates average 91.5 per cent in Kent, with the highest survival levels being present in Canterbury, Swale, Dover, Sevenoaks, and Thanet
  • An annual increase of 2.6 per cent in the number of new businesses registered in the county

A recent business demographic survey also revealed that Kent has experienced a reduction in the number of business deaths (which are down to 2.7 per cent as opposed the national average of 6.1 per cent). In terms of business stock, the largest clusters are in Ashford (5,400), Maidstone (6,800), Sevenoaks (6,700), Canterbury (5,200), Dartford (3,600), Dover (3,300), and Tunbridge Wells (6,400). Business birth rates are at their highest in Gravesham, Canterbury, Thanet, and Tunbridge Wells.

In the near future, significant growth is anticipated in sectors as diverse as sales, manufacturing, finance, logistics, and human resources. Business support schemes like High Growth Kent have been developed to help firms in these sectors achieve their full potential and attract further investment into the area.
