Once a major industrial hub, Lancashire has evolved into a bustling economy that has proven its potential for growth. According to the Lancashire County Council, the area is home to more than 49,000 VAT-registered businesses (which amounts to 21 per cent of the North West's total business stock), has a GVA of £25.5 billion, and provides employment to a workforce of over 617,000 people. At the forefront of this healthy state of affairs we find key industry sectors like defence, aerospace, manufacturing, food production, and business services, which now benefit from being part of dedicated Enterprise Zones like the ones at Warton and Samlesbury. Lancashire's Enterprise Zones cater predominantly to businesses involved in automotive manufacturing, aerospace, and advanced engineering, and provide them with excellent opportunities to become part of one of the country's most profitable supply chains.

Recent business demographic studies have shown that the most important focal points of commercial activity are in Lancaster (which has over 4,100 companies), Preston (4,900), Chorley (4,080), Blackpool (3,900), and South Ribble (3,800). These areas also have the highest rates of business births. When it comes to business survival rates, those involved in agricultural activities, fishing, and manufacturing seem to have the best chances of long-term survival, whereas companies involved in seasonal trade or activities like retail, hospitality, and food services do show lower overall survival rates. In terms of the geographical distribution of 5-year survival rates, areas like Chorley, Pendle, the Ribble Valley, Rossendale, Wyre, and West Lancashire boast the healthiest figures.

Future growth will focus on four strategic areas: infrastructure improvements with the creation of dedicated catapult and technology centres funded by the Growth Deal; investment in a Skills for Growth programme, boosting the productivity and scope of the local research and development facilities; and strengthening Lancashire's position as a business growth hub. In addition, strategies have already been developed to improve the capabilities of the local aerospace industry and to bring its annual growth rates of 5 per cent during the next three decades. Promising opportunities also exist in the nuclear sector, mainly thanks to the presence of offshore energy generation firms and of research centres at the University of Lancashire and UCLan. Healthcare, security technology, and business process outsourcing are also expected to generate a vast number of opportunities across the county within the next decade.
