Done right, gift exchange games like these can definitely brighten the office vibe. But done poorly, it can create more awkwardness at the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/primeofficespace.co.uk\/latest\/office-christmas-party-dress\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work Christmas party<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than an over-shared email chain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this blog post, we polled 50+ office workers, managers, and HR staff about their particular company\u2019s Secret Santa ideas as well as their dos and don&#8217;ts. To ensure your office holiday gift exchange stays on the cheerful side, here are the golden rules of this tradition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Secret Santa etiquette dos: What do UK office managers and staff say?<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Do: Give enough time\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nobody enjoys the idea of running up and down a crowded high street in the middle of a Secret Santa rush. Especially at the time of year when the shops are already packed and the weather is less than accommodating. Most of the workplaces who responded to our survey said they give staff 2+ weeks to prepare. Considering that everyone is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/primeofficespace.co.uk\/latest\/how-to-get-your-business-ready-for-christmas\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">busy during the festive season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a week\u2019s notice should be the absolute bare minimum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><b>Do: Set a reasonable budget<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/workplacewellbeing.pro\/news\/167m-spent-on-workplace-secret-santa-but-1-3-reluctant-to-take-part\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UK workers spent \u00a3167m on Secret Santa gifts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which works out to \u00a315.5 \/ person. Our own survey shows that 58% of workplaces are setting limits at \u00a320 or under. A few high rollers allow \u00a335 or more, but as one of our UK respondents,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/brian-futral-083194292\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brian Futral<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Founder and Head of Content at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/themarketingheaven.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Marketing Heaven<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, said, \u201cSecret Santa doesn&#8217;t have to be expensive or wasteful, a free office Secret Santa means re-gifting, thinking outside the box, or getting creative with your giving.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Do: Go beyond the good old<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/primeofficespace.co.uk\/latest\/office-secret-santa\/\"> <b>Secret Santa formula<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might seem there are traditional Secret Santa rules that must be followed. But adding your own twist to this tradition can make all the difference to how employees engage with the celebration. For example, one of our respondents,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mimi-nguyen-47025b2bb\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mimi Nguyen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Co-Founder of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cafely.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cafely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, said they picked the theme &#8220;favourite childhood snacks&#8221;, which sparked nostalgia-filled conversations and shared memories that are great for bonding.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another respondent,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/james-hacking\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Hacking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Founder and Chief Playmaker of<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sociallypowerful.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Socially Powerful<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, encouraged staff to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">write down a few quirky facts or things they like in advance, without revealing their identity. The team then shared these snippets anonymously, and people had to guess who they were buying for based on the clues. A fun way to learn something new about someone!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Do: Consider non-material gifts<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past few years, we\u2019ve seen a surge in interest for sustainable Secret Santa gifts and other original ways to play Secret Santa. For example, a survey found that<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instantprint.co.uk\/printspiration\/be-inspired\/the-secret-santa-survey-2024\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">handmade items are among the most popular gifts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but why not take this a step further and switch to non-material gifts this year?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/eliotvancil\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliot Vancil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, CEO of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fuellogic.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fuel Logic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> responded to our survey explaining their innovative approach: they host a &#8220;Secret Skill Santa&#8221; swap, where people give each other access to their skills or talents instead of the standard physical gift exchange. This keeps the options quite open, as gifts could be anything from a personalised playlist to home-baked biscuits, knitted wrist-warmers, a short photo shoot, etc. As people open their &#8220;gift envelopes,&#8221; the person who gives them the skill tells the story that goes with it. According to other studies,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehrdirector.com\/business-news\/the-workplace\/one-three-dont-want-take-part-secret-santa-year\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30% of the workers surveyed would rather not be there<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and up to 18% say it creates unnecessary stress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Could it be that office staff are not too keen on this tradition because some ways of going about it are off-putting? Possibly! Here are some things to avoid to make this year\u2019s Secret Santa more appealing for all your staff.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Don\u2019t: Stick to the old hat routine<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While picking names out of a hat has its retro gift exchange charm, 20.4% of workplaces we polled said they\u2019re embracing tech-savvy solutions like their own in-house apps, spin-the-wheel tools like <strong>wheelofnames<\/strong>, or more purpose-built online Secret Santa tools like <\/span><strong>Elfster<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>drawnames<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to allocate gift giving partners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These tools keep things fair and anonymous, while reducing the risk of \u201caccidental\u201d peeks at Secret Santa identities and any resultant awkwardness. Plus, they allow everyone to focus on the fun part: the actual gift exchange and the experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Don\u2019t: Be a Scrooge<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBudget-conscious\u201d doesn\u2019t have to mean \u201cminimum effort.\u201d In fact,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instantprint.co.uk\/printspiration\/be-inspired\/the-secret-santa-survey-2024\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some of the most disliked Secret Santa gifts are \u201cminimum effort\u201d items<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like socks, mugs, teddy bears, and lottery tickets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily, there are many ways you can channel your inner bargain-hunter: charity shops, vintage finds, or even re-gifting something after adding a personal touch. What matters is choosing a gift that shows you\u2019ve been thoughtful rather than thoughtless!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Don\u2019t: Risk it<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meaning, avoid Secret Santa gifts that are overly personal, risqu\u00e9, politically charged, or controversial. Sometimes, the difference between being cheeky with what you think are funny Secret Santa gifts and coming across as rude is just a thin line. So don\u2019t put your friendly work atmosphere at risk, and if in doubt, go for universally appreciated items.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Don\u2019t: Rule out other options<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gift exchange is an essential part of Secret Santa, but it\u2019s a good idea to stay open to other options. Some employees may prefer giving instead of gifting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To ensure everyone enjoys the tradition, you could let staff choose whether they want to receive a gift or have their Secret Santa partner give to a charity on their behalf. After all, according to a 2023 survey,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/employernews.co.uk\/christmas\/a-third-of-employees-would-prefer-not-to-take-part-in-secret-santa\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22% of workers interviewed said they\u2019d prefer giving to charity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Don\u2019t: Ruin the mood<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So you got a bottle of wine but you don\u2019t drink, or a box of Cadbury treats but you\u2019ve just started a diet, or a bath bomb but you\u2019re allergic to one of the ingredients\u2026 even if the gift is really far off your tastes, remember that your colleague made the effort, probably with the best intentions.
