North Yorkshire is part of the York and East Riding Local Economic Partnership. The low carbon and renewable energy sector is another high-value industry that is yet to be fully developed in the area. North Yorkshire has a high level of specialisation in this sector, and particularly in areas like bio-renewables and carbon capture. Investment in this sector has focused on developing green infrastructure and low carbon buildings, increasing the number of companies involved in bioenergy and strengthening the supply chain in the offshore wind industry. Moreover, a recent Prospects for Green Jobs report indicated that by 2020, approximately 9 per cent of all the UK energy and bio-energy jobs will be based in North Yorkshire, pointing at the enormous potential for growth of this sector.

Tourism is also a thriving industry, as North Yorkshire is a prime tourist destination catering to visitors interested in city breaks, countryside retreats, and eco-tourism. The main hubs of business activity within this sector are located in the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors, Harrogate, York, and Whitby. Further growth is expected in this sector by 2020, as the local authorities have drafted a plan for business growth that aims to support micro-enterprises and SMEs in North Yorkshire, as these make up the bulk of the local industry base.
