Following a period of transition and uncertainty caused by the economic recession, Nottinghamshire has emerged as one of the best performing regional economies north of the British capital. Data from recent economic surveys show that Nottinghamshire based businesses were confident in their ability to expand and to generate higher revenues. Approximately 20 per cent of all local companies had already taken on new staff, and sales and export figures across the county were also on the rise. Moreover, and according to the UK Competitiveness Index, local competitiveness levels are in line with the national average.

This positive performance has been largely driven by Nottinghamshire's key strengths:

  • A highly skilled workforce and a strong talent pool trained at the local universities and higher education institutions.
  • Strong links between the local academic and business communities. The University of Nottingham has excellent rankings and is among the world's top 1 per cent. The university is also one of the UK's four University Enterprise Zones, which play a crucial role stimulating growth and strengthening the innovation and competitiveness levels of local businesses. The Haydn Green Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (based at the university) provides incubation space and research-led support in areas like small firm growth, entrepreneurial creativity, and executive education.
  • Modern and recently upgraded infrastructure, thanks to investments amounting to £1 billion.
  • Affordable business space, which on average is between 5 and 7 per cent lower than in other English cities.
  • An excellent location between the major north-south and east-west transportation networks, as well as proximity to major railway hubs and to an international airport.
  • A comprehensive range of business support services and schemes designed to provide assistance with recruitment, corporate finance, access to funds, and business expansion.

According to a Centre for Cities report, Nottingham is one of the few UK cities located outside of the prosperous southern region that experienced significant job gains over the last decade. More employment opportunities and housing affordability are two of the key factors that have attracted large numbers of professionals and recent graduates to Nottinghamshire's county town.

The establishment of the Creative Quarter has also helped local SMEs flourish thanks to dedicated creative workspace, workforce training programmes, business events, and marketing activities. Recently, Nottingham has also become a top location for the clean energy sector, with more than 900 companies currently involved in such activities in and around the city and thanks to the presence of leading research centres, such as the Energy Technologies Research Institute and the Nottingham Clean Tech Centre.
