As one of the home counties, Surrey is home to a vibrant business community that has close links with the British capital. A large percentage of the county (up to 73 per cent) is a designated green belt, which has made Surrey an attractive location to live and work. Excellent cross-country connectivity is another key feature of the local environment in Surrey, as the county is within easy reach of two of the UK's major airports (Heathrow and Gatwick) and is served by the M25 and M3 roads. Currently, Surrey provides employment to more than 600,000 people and, at £26 billion a year, its economic output is larger than that produced by major cities like Birmingham and Liverpool.

More than 200 international firms are headquartered in Surrey, whereas the number of SMEs is in the region of 60,000. Approximately 88 per cent of all businesses registered in Surrey are micro-enterprises employing between 1 and 10 people. Key employers include Procter & Gamble, Toyota, Samsung Electronics, BP, Unilever, Sony, Pfizer, and McLaren. In addition, several world-class facilities are based in Surrey and contribute to the county's forward-looking profile. Some of these include the Pirbright Laboratory, which carries our biomedical research at the highest level; the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency; the Leatherhead Food Research site; the Surrey Research Park, whose activities focus on software development and gaming; and the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, which is based in Dorking.

Growth plans have been carefully devised with the objective of capitalising on Surrey's strengths and opening up new business opportunities in high-growth sectors, such as pharmaceuticals, IT, financial services, and real estate. By 2030, it is expected that the local economy's value will have increased to £52 billion. The county's growth strategy is managed by Surrey Connects, an organisation that has pledged to drive competitiveness, innovation, and entrepreneurial drive across Surrey by focussing on sustainability and skills. Key strategies will include achieving 100 per cent superfast broadband coverage throughout the county, strengthening the links between higher education institutions and business communities, stimulating business creation and increasing survival rates, and allocating more resources to the county's R&D budget.
