Located between Birmingham and Coventry and within easy reach of Northampton, Gloucester, and Leicester, Warwickshire enjoys a strategic location in the West Midlands. The county's location and recent infrastructure improvements have contributed to remarkable growth levels, which have surpassed the national average in indicators like business growth and population growth. At 45.7 per 10,000 people, business start-up rates are very much in line with the UK average, and the same can be said about Warwickshire's share of knowledge-intensive business sectors. It is also important to note that approximately 95 per cent of all new businesses registered in Warwickshire over the past decade were new start-ups, which points at the excellent levels of entrepreneurial activity present throughout the county. There are approximately 36,000 companies registered in the county and the number of jobs exceeds 400,000. Local competitiveness indicators are particularly good in Warwick (which ranks 46th on a list of 379 UK cities), Stratford-on-Avon (52nd), and Rugby (94th). These cities also boast the highest GVA per head levels, with Warwick ranking 54th out of 379.

The local sectoral mix shows some sub-regional variation, with clusters of low-value manufacturing and public sector activities in Nuneaton, Coventry, and Rugby, and a higher proportion of high-value sectors (computing, software, advanced manufacturing, and business services) in Stratford and Warwick. Moreover, and according to the local council, Warwickshire (and the Coventry area in particular) is one of the UK's sub-regions with the highest number of low carbon business opportunities. Entrepreneurs with an interest in this industry sector can take advantage of Warwickshire's top assets, which include the presence of world-class research institutions such as the Warwick Manufacturing Group, the Wolseley Sustainable Building Centre, MIRA, and Coventry University. Some successful low-emission initiatives are already in place in the county, such as the Coventry and Birmingham Low Emissions Demonstrator.

Business engagement and inward investment are top priorities for Warwickshire County Council, which aims to address issues like below-average productivity levels, improving connectivity within the country and along the UK's north-south corridor, and increasing the number of high-growth businesses, as these are currently under-represented. A number of projects are either underway or have already been completed with the objective of facilitating sustainable growth and of achieving the goals stated above. These include the development of Stoneleigh Park near Coventry, the expansion of the commercial site at Radio Station, the delivery of 1.2 million square feet of space at Ansty Park (which is already home to leading organisations like the Manufacturing Technology Centre), and the expansion of the Prologis distribution centre.

With regards to future growth, a recent Cambridge Econometrics report has predicted that by 2031, the county's job gains will average 9.7 per cent, although this figure may be as high as 20 per cent in Warwick and Stratford. Industries like distribution, transportation, automotive manufacturing, creative, finance, and business services are expected to experience sustained growth levels within the next 15 to 20 years.
