The county of West Lothian benefits from a convenient location between some of the most prosperous Scottish regions, including Falkirk, North and South Lanarkshire, and the Edinburgh metropolitan area. Construction, ICT, transportation, and wholesale are also comparatively larger in West Lothian than in the rest of Scotland. West Lothian (more specifically the towns of Livingston and Broxburn) also enjoys Enterprise Area status applicable to the food and drink, life sciences, and tourism sectors. This means that local companies engaged in such activities can benefit from business rates relief, marketing and skills training support, and access to superfast broadband.

Moreover, the county is home to some top tourist attractions, such as the Almond Valley Heritage Centre, Linlinthgow Palace, and the Howden Park Centre. These venues receive more than 300,000 visitors every year. All in all, West Lothian attracts an average of 1.17 million tourists every year, and the local visitor economy is worth approximately £154 million. Retail activities (as measured by footfall figures) have been on the rise in West Lothian for a number of years, particularly in and around Livingston.

According to a demographic survey carried out by the local council, West Lothian has one of the UK's fastest growing populations, and it is expected that this trend will continue. A larger population is likely to produce an increase in demand for both basic and specialised services, and this in turn can generate an excellent range of business opportunities in areas like health, education, energy production, construction, and real estate.
