The West Midlands is a large geographical area comprised of a mix of rural and urban centres, including the second most populous city in the UK (Birmingham), as well other major British cities like Coventry, Stoke-on-Trent, and Wolverhampton. The finance and business services sectors are particularly important throughout the county, as the West Midlands are home to the UK's second largest concentration of firms in this industry. According to the West Midlands Economic Forum, manufacturing accounts for 15 per cent of the local output structure. Approximately 20 per cent of all British exports to China come from the Jaguar Land Rover plant in the West Midlands, and growth rates in this sector are expected to reach 8 per cent by 2017. In addition to automotive manufacturing, the West Midlands is home to well-established clusters of companies involved in aerospace, food and beverages, and pharmaceuticals.

Key business locations within the West Midlands include:

  • Birmingham, which was listed as the foreign direct investment destination of the future.
  • Wolverhampton, an internationally renowned centre of excellence for the aerospace, automotive, and advanced manufacturing industries. The city has a GVA of over £10 billion a year and a workforce of more than 300,000 people. Approximately 84 per cent of all Wolverhampton-based businesses have between 0 and 9 employees.
  • Coventry, which is considered a leading destination for automotive engineering, low-carbon energy production, and digital media activities. Coventry is also a hub for gaming and software development companies, as 10 per cent of all UK workers employed in this high-growth sector are based in the area.
  • Stoke-on-Trent, an entrepreneurial hotspot that is home to nearly 30 strategic sites, including science, industrial, and business parks.

In addition, the West Midlands is home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites and many Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, whose existence has helped boost the local tourist sector, which currently employs more than 200,000 people.
