For several decades, West Sussex has been a highly desirable business location thanks to its great location along main railway lines and motorways and to its forward-looking business community. The West Sussex Independent Economic Commission has estimated the value of the local economy at nearly £17 billion, with employment numbers being at 355,000 and the number of registered business at over 31,000.

The so-called Gatwick Diamond serves as a cluster for innovation and growth and is currently home to 45,000 companies, 500 of which are renowned multinationals. Thanks to its outstanding facilities and strategic location within 30 minutes of central London and only 1.5 hours away from five large sea ports, this area offers access to global markets and to a highly skilled workforce. In particular, the Gatwick Diamond constitutes an ideal location for businesses engaged in activities like environmental technologies, food and drinks production, aerospace and aviation, life sciences, medical technologies, financial services, and advanced manufacturing. Some of the top business locations within the Triangle include Burgess Hill Business Park, the Broadlands Business Campus in Horsham, Graylands Estate (also in Horsham), and Manor Royal Business District, which is the largest business facility of its kind in the United Kingdom.

Some large companies that have chosen West Sussex as their base include Rolls Royce, KPMG, Siemens, Roche Diagnostics, Grant Thornton, Deloitte, GlaxoSmithKline, EDF, Nestle, Unilever, Novartis, Serco, and Motorola. However, 96 per cent of West Sussex's businesses are SMEs, many of which offer highly specialised services like marine engineering. In and around Worthing, tourism presents a large number of business opportunities. This sector has proven to be particularly resilient to various economic downturns, and has been identified as a high-grow sector with excellent potential for development. More than £50 million have been earmarked for investment in this sector as part of a kick start package that aims to increase productivity across coastal and rural districts in West Sussex.

Future growth plans include promoting the bioengineering industry, facilitating the establishment of SMEs involved in high-end finance, and expanding the capacity currently offered by Gatwick airport. There is still plenty of untapped potential at business sites that are currently under-developed, such as Gatwick Green, Shoreham harbour and airport, and Enterprise (at Bognor Regis).
