Despite its relatively small size, Falkirk is considered a premier business location within Scotland. The county has a growing population of more than 170,000 people, and furthermore, its strategic location near the M9 and the M8 roads means that 60 per cent of the total population in Scotland lives within a 1 hour radius. Traditionally, and thanks to the presence of Grangemouth's port (the largest of its kind in Scotland), the local industry base relied on trade, exports, and warehousing. However, over the past two decades local business owners and investors have found new opportunities in other industry sectors, including manufacturing, petrochemicals (especially in Grangemouth, whose total turnover amounts to one third of the Scottish output in this sector), and leisure and tourism. The latter are particularly important in urban centres like Falkirk town, which is also one of Scotland's top ten best retail performers.

In terms of employee numbers, the most important sectors are professional and business services (employing 10.6 per cent of the local workforce), manufacturing (10.7 per cent), health care (20.6), and wholesale and retail (16.9 per cent). The growth of these and other sectors can be partly attributed to the strategy known as My Future's in Falkirk, which was launched in 2002 with the objective of facilitating economic growth by diversifying the local industry base and increasing the quality of life across the county. As a result of this strategic plan, in 2010 Falkirk was listed as one of the most entrepreneurial locations in Scotland. New infrastructure developments, a central location between Scotland's two largest cities, and proximity to Edinburgh International airport are some of the factors that were taken into account when creating this ranking. In addition, Falkirk offers a variety of high-quality business sites at very affordable rates. These range from large business and industrial parks to retail venues, warehouses, and land available for development.

Business support is available in the form of investment grants, start-up loan funds, and other financial incentives such as the 3k Business Grant Scheme, the East of Scotland Investment Fund, and the BP Business Loan Fund.
