The industrial town of Sittingbourne is emerging as a commuter town for London because of its location. Thanks to its position on the train line linking with Victoria and St. Pancras International stations, residents can reach London in approximately one hour.

Traditionally, Sittingbourne's economy has been based on brick-making thanks to local clay and chalk deposits. During the industrial revolution, the town emerged as an important port used to transport produce from Kent to markets in London. The town was also an important hub for paper mills, with paper manufacturing beginning in the area in the 18th century.

Today, residential developments are solidifying Sittingbourne as a major commuter town. However, traditional economic activities such as paper manufacturing, water transport and cement production remain.
