Nottingham’s MediPark will help boost the city of Nottingham’s position as a place for medical discoveries and support it as a designated Science City. The project will also help bring together life sciences and technology companies to create a new place to innovate.
Built next to one of Europe’s largest teaching hospitals, MediPark covers an area of 3.5 hectares. Companies based at the new medical technology and science park will have easy access to the Queen’s Medical Centre, helping to promote collaboration and knowledge transfer particularly in the clinical sector. It will also be located close to the University of Nottingham. Planned for development in three phases, the site will feature up to 100,000 square feet of high-tech business and laboratory spaces. These spaces will be feature high standards of design and sustainability, and will be well-connected to Nottingham’s tram network. Overall, the MediPark will feature nine buildings and deliver 400,000 square feet of employment space as well as space for accommodation, a hotel, retail space, and leisure facilities.
MediPark is one of the key projects identified in the Nottingham Growth Plan, which was released in 2012. This plan focuses on supporting the city’s key sectors, including the life sciences sector. The project is within the Nottingham Enterprise Zone, a development area that is expected to create up to 10,000 jobs and focus on attracting new technology businesses to the city. In addition to MediPark, the Enterprise Zone includes the Boots campus, Nottingham Science Park and Beeston Business Park. MediPark is also at the heart of the expansion of the NET Tram Network, which will link the site to the M1 motorway, the city centre and key transport hubs including the refurbished Nottingham rail station.
Plans for Nottingham’s MediPark first surfaced in 2007 and 2008, although development on the brownfield site has been relatively slow. Construction on the MediPark site began in the first quarter of 2013-14 with site preparation and decontamination, and it is expected to be complete in the fourth quarter of 2022-23. The project’s estimated gross development value (GDV) is £100 million. It is expected that construction will create approximately 500 temporary jobs, while the site itself will help create up to 1,000 permanent jobs. The project was designed by architects Studio Egret West and has involved a number of partners, including D2N2 (the region’s Local Enterprise Partnership), Nottingham Regeneration Limited (NRL), Blueprint, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, Nottingham City Council and Nottingham Development Enterprise.
When complete, MediPark will help attract private sector jobs, particularly from growing companies in the medical and bio-science sector to Nottingham. With excellent transport links and its strategic location close to the Queen’s Medical Centre, the site will provide new businesses with a new hub to innovate and collaborate.
